Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg was formed in the early 1990's, evolving from an earlier design firm that began in the mid 1980's led by Chris Phillips. We are now over thirty-five strong and have two design offices in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. PFS was founded by Chris Phillips and Greg Smallenberg, both Landscape Architects, and Marta Farevaag, an Urban Planner who are all active partners in the practice. Ross Dixon and Jennifer Nagai, both principals in the firm, together with an experienced senior design staff are central to the management of our project portfolio.
Initially PFS occupied several, increasingly larger office spaces on Granville Island. In 1996, the firm moved to its own building in Kitsilano where we have been ever since.
With continued expansion and more national and international commissions, PFS now occupies a separate studio which is located nearby their home office and is where most of the larger-scale and international projects are undertaken.
Over the years, the scope and complexity of our work has increased, changing from a practice focused primarily on landscape architecture in the Pacific Northwest and town planning projects for communities across British Columbia to one with added focus on large-scale and urban design-related assignments across Canada, in the United States, and in Europe. In addition, PFS has had a long term and sustained interest in Southeast Asia and China, undertaking numerous assignments of varying scales and winning several international design and planning competitions.
